Living as Citizens of Heaven: A Devotional Study on Romans 13

Introduction

As believers in Christ, our ultimate citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20). Yet, we still live here, on earth, as inhabitants of this world. Romans 13 serves as a guide for living out our faith as citizens of earth while also remembering our ultimate allegiance to God. Let's explore the truths and insights embedded in this passage.

Section 1: Giving Authority (Romans 13:1-2)

Devotional Thought: God has established agencies and powers, calling on us to honor them. This includes governments, rulers, and authorities. Our respect for authority allows for a peaceful and ordered society. As Christians, our respect for authority should stem from a reverence for the One who grants us breath and being (Acts 17:25).

Reflection Questions:

  • How do we honor earthly authorities while still remembering our allegiance to God?
  • How can we show respect for our leaders, even in areas where we don't agree?

Section 2: Paying Taxes (Romans 13:3-7)

Devotional Thought: As believers in Christ, we should be conscientious in our financial obligations. Jesus says, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's" (Matthew 22:21). Our obligation to pay taxes serves as an expression of our respect for God-appointed authorities. In paying our taxes, we also acknowledge that we are accountable to God for the portion of our resources He has granted us (Matthew 25:14-30).

Reflection Questions:

  • How do we balance our responsibilities to earthly authorities and our allegiance to God when it comes to money matters?
  • How can we trust God's provision in both our financial and spiritual gifts?

Section 3: Avoiding Evil (Romans 13:8-14)

Devotional Thought: As Christians, we are called to do good and avoid evil. This includes abstaining from selfishness, vice, greed, and the like. Living a godly life allows us to engage in good works that honor God and bring glory to Him (Ephesians 2:10). Our avoidance of evil may also lead others to honor God (1 Peter 3:15-16).

Reflection Questions:

  • How can we resist the allure of evil as Christians while still living in society?
  • How can our avoidance of evil lead others to honor God?

Section 4: Walking in Love (Romans 13:8-14)

Devotional Thought: Above all, we are called to love our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:39). As we carry out our responsibilities as citizens of earth, let's do so in love. Our love for others should stem from a godly love that reflects Christ (2 Corinthians 5:14). Walking in love allows us to serve our fellow humans and manifest Christ's love (Colossians 3:14).

Reflection Questions:

  • How can we demonstrate Christ's love as we live as citizens of earth?
  • How can we integrate our love for others into our daily lives?

Conclusion:

As we close our devotional journey through Romans 13, let's remember that our ultimate allegiance is to God. However, as we live out our earthly citizenship, let's also honor societal authorities, respect financial responsibilities, avoid evil, and love our neighbors. May we strive to live in a way that best honors God as we journey through this world.
