Deuteronomy-2

Wandering in the Wilderness: A Devotional Study on Deuteronomy 2

Introduction

In Deuteronomy 2, Moses leads the Israelites on a journey through the wilderness. This chapter illuminates the rebellion, rebellion, and disobedience that characterized the Israelites' journey so far. As we delve into Deuteronomy 2, let's explore the spiritual insights we can glean from this wilderness wanderers' tale.

Section 1: From Mount Hor to Kadesh-barnea (Deuteronomy 2:1-7)

Devotional Thought: After the death of Aaron's son, Eleazar, the Israelites moved from Mount Hor. Moses reminded his people that the divine instruction to go to Mount Seir and then to the land of the Ammonites and Moabites was to bypass the expletive-spoken Edomites. The readiness to follow God's guidance despite its restriction highlights our need to trust in God's ways despite perceived obstacles.

Reflection Questions:

  • How often do we second-guess God's ways rather than trusting in His plans?
  • Are the challenges and restrictions, as we see them, preventing us from following God's way?

Section 2: The Spirited Amalekites (Deuteronomy 2:14-19)

Devotional Thought: As the Israelites continued on their trek, the Amalekites emerged as their foe. Moses' relentless instruction to destroy the Amalekites in total contrasts with Israel's response - they only partially obliterated them. Today, let's evaluate our commitment to uproot sin from our lives and the loved ones around us.

Reflection Questions:

  • Are we adequate in our efforts to destroy sin in our lives?
  • Do we overlook sin in those close to us and allow it to take roots?

Section 3: The Handful of Canaanite Kings (Deuteronomy 2:20-22)

Devotional Thought: Upon reaching the border of Canaan, three powerful kingdoms attempted to dissuade the Israelites from crossing. Moses encouraged a peaceful passage, for God would give them Canaan. This passage reveals that despite the challenges and obstacles, Jehovah-Jireh, our provider, would see us through.

Reflection Questions:

  • How often do we reject God's provision precisely when we need it?
  • Are we willing to trust in God's promises rather than fall for fearmongering accusations?

Section 4: The Warning against Settlement (Deuteronomy 2:24-37)

Devotional Thought: As the journey drew to a close, Moses warned the people of the dangers of settling in the land of any of the nations spared. Moses explained that this would corrupt their faithfulness and longing still to possess the land God intended. This passage highlights the importance of our focus and pursuits.

Reflection Questions:

  • Are we concentrating on the things with fleeting pleasures while neglecting to dwell on the Lord?
  • Are we willing to set aside temporary satisfactions in pursuit of the eternal?

Conclusion:

Deuteronomy 2 illuminates the wilderness experience of the Israelites but also the spiritual dimension that connects us. As we journey through life, we should remain vigilant in following God's instructions despite perceived restrictions and resist the attempts to derail us. May we continue striving to remove sin from our lives while keeping our focus on our eternal pursuit - Christ.
