Esther-6
Feasting and Favor: A Devotional Study on Esther 6
Introduction
As the story of Esther nears its climax, we find King Xerxes in a fit of insomnia and restlessness. It's in this moment that God's plan will begin to unfold, and we are invited to learn once more of the goodness, providence, and grace of God in his dealings with the human heart.
Section 1: The King Unrests (Esther 6:1-4)
Devotional Thought: King Xerxes struggled with insomnia, insecurity, and restlessness. Often, we, too, are plagued by these same emotions. When we find ourselves restless and unease within, take time to reflect on the goodness, providence, and grace of God. Trust that though we do not feel those emotions in that moment, God is still present and working.
Reflection Questions:
- How have you experienced God's goodness, providence, and grace in moments where you felt restless?
- What are some strategies you can employ in moments of restlessness to remind yourself of God's faithfulness?
Section 2: The Banquet is Prepared (Esther 6:5-9)
Devotional Thought: Haman was summoned to the palace, unaware that his fate was about to change. Let us be mindful that just as quickly as God can raise us up, He can humble us. Similarly, just as suddenly as God can be gracious with us, He can reveal His wrath.
Reflection Questions:
- Have you experienced a sudden shift in your circumstances, either up or down?
- How can you respond in faith when your circumstances shift?
Section 3: The Dilemma for Haman (Esther 6:10-14)
Devotional Thought: Haman left the palace puzzled. The concept of Honior's banquet stirred up intense emotions within him. Today, take time to consider how the gospel teaches us to respond to those intense emotions: with forgiveness and love (Ephesians 4:32).
Reflection Questions:
- How do you respond to intense emotions within yourself?
- In what ways can you extend forgiveness and love, even in moments where intense emotions are present?
Conclusion:
As we conclude our devotional journey through Esther 6, let us remain mindful of God's sovereignty and His work in the hearts of men. May we be quick to respond with forgiveness and love, and may we stand in awe of the goodness, providence, and grace of God in all our circumstances. As Esther said in Esther 4:15, "If it pleases the king, let the king and Haman come today to the banquet that I have prepared for him." May we, too, be gentle in our responses and extend God's grace to all whom we encounter.
