Nehemiah-4

Rebuilding the Wall: A Devotional Study on Nehemiah 4

Introduction

The book of Nehemiah records the story of a man who (like many good leaders) felt a God-given call to action. In response to this divine prompting, Nehemiah left his comfortable position as the King's cupbearer to rebuild the ruins of Jerusalem's broken-down wall. Upon his return to Judah, Nehemiah faced significant opposition; however, he prayerfully and steadfastly marshaled his resources and addressed the difficulties (see Nehemiah 2, 4, and 6). The book details his successful approach to renewing the wall while also revealing many important messages about the character of God, the nature of oppression, and the role of faith. Let's dive deeper into this inspirational story, rediscovering the spiritual lessons it offers.

Section 1: Laying the Foundation (Nehemiah 4:1-3)

Devotional Thought: Nehemiah encountered some ridicule from the Sanballat and Geshem. However, their mockery was no match for Nehemiah's faith and resolve. He quietly prayed, "O Lord, I pray, let my soul remember thee: let mine heart be attached unto thee: see thou me, and hear my prayer." As believers, we can face ridicule, but faith and prayer can help us rebuild our spiritual walls to withstand challenges.

Reflection Questions:

  • When facing opposition or ridicule, do you still have faith to rebuild what's been broken down?
  • Have you set a firm foundation through prayer and seeking God's guidance?

Section 2: Strengthening the Gates (Nehemiah 4:4-6)

Devotional Thought: Nehemiah emphasized that the wall's gates were crucial to its overall security. After strengthening the gates, Nehemiah set guards to watch over them day and night. As Christians, the spiritual gates of our hearts must be protected too. Guardianship takes commitment, especially in our hearts.

Reflection Questions:

  • What spiritual gates in your heart need securing?
  • Who are you inviting into and keeping out of those gates?

Section 3: Dealings with the Enemy (Nehemiah 4:7-13)

Devotional Thought: Nehemiah knew that the enemy, Sanballat, was plotting against him. Nehemiah, however, remained steadfast and did not allow fear to deter him from his mission. Instead, he put his trust in God, heartily praying to Him and directing his fellow builders' attention to building, rather than attacking the enemy. By focusing on God's command instead of the enemy's wiles, Nehemiah's people remained secure.

Reflection Questions:

  • Are you letting fear or their enemy's deeds impact your focus on living out God's commands?
  • How can you ensure that you are keeping God's commandments despite whatever obstacles may hinder your progress?

Conclusion:

In Nehemiah 4, we read about Nehemiah's remarkable spirit despite facing opposition, ridicule, and enemies. His entrepreneurial spirit and faith in God led to success despite considerable adversity. The book of Nehemiah reveals valuable spiritual messages for us in our daily lives. Through excitedly rebuilding the spiritual wall, keeping our spiritual gates secure, and focusing our energy on God's commandments, we can learn, grow, and develop into disciples living out the promise of living a life worthy of the Lord Christ Jesus.
