Numbers-21
Singing a Song of Praise: A Devotional Study on Numbers 21
Introduction
The book of Numbers consists of a long journey through the wilderness, but amidst the desert, there was a sweet moment of worship. The Israelites sang a song of praise following God's provision of water from the rock (Numbers 21:17). As we study this chapter, let's meditate on the value of praise and worship to our faith.
Section 1: Water from the Rock (Numbers 21:14-20)
Devotional Thought: God, out of His mercy, provides for His people. He gave the Israelites water from the rock in the wilderness. But, as love is best expressed through actions, the way God provides for His people matters. In this instance, God invited the people to act. Moses, instead of striking the rock as commanded by God, struck it angrily (verses 11-12). This act demonstrated the people's lack of faith in the Lord. But in verse 17, the people sing praises to God, acknowledging His provision. Let's learn to appreciate God's provision in our lives, while acknowledging His role as our provider.
Reflection Questions:
- How do you appreciate God's provision in your life?
- In what ways have you shown faith or lack of faith in God's provision?
Section 2: Centered on God (Numbers 21:21-23)
Devotional Thought: As the people continue to travel through the wilderness, they are beset by thirst. But, God, in His faithfulness, leads the people to Meribah. We use the name Meribah today as a reference to strife. However, in this context, Meribah is God's reminder that He is the source of our strength. God enlightens Moses on a rock and teaches us the importance of being centered on God as a source of life and provision.
Reflection Questions:
- How do you stay centered on God in times of need or during difficult periods in your life?
- How can you be a source of strength for others, provided by God?
Section 3: Singing a Song of Praise (Numbers 21:17)
Devotional Thought: In response to God's provision, the Israelites sang a song of praise. Their song of praise reflected their gratitude for God's goodness and mercy. In a world filled with trials, we too must learn to sing praises to God. Cultivate a spirit of praise and reflection, acknowledging God's many blessings in your life.
Reflection Questions:
- When was the last time you made a conscious effort to praise God for His blessings?
- How can you incorporate more praise and reflection into your daily life?
Conclusion:
As we wrap up our devotional journey through Numbers chapter 21, let's internalize the importance of praise and worship. It not only shows our appreciation for God's provision but also helps us internalize the truths of God's provision and His goodness. May we cultivate a spirit of praise and reflection, and develop a reverential spirit in our daily lives.
