Cities of Refuge: A Devotional Study on Numbers 35

Introduction

The book of Numbers continues to chronicle the journey of the Israelites through the wilderness towards the Promised Land. In the midst of this journey, God establishes six cities of refuge for the protection of those who accidentally cause the death of another. In this study, we will explore these cities of refuge and the deeper symbolism behind them.

Section 1: Purpose of Cities of Refuge (Numbers 35:1-6)

Devotional Thought: God establishes these cities to prevent members of his community from developing a hardened heart due to repeated sin. The cities provide sanctuary to those who have unintentionally caused a fatality. Consider the parallel in our lives. As we make our way through life, there is a temptation to grow indifferent to the imperfections and offenses of others. Let's intentionally cultivate a spirit of grace and forgiveness, extending refuge and compassion to others.

Reflection Questions:

  • How does the concept of a city of refuge challenge you to prioritize grace and forgiveness in your relationships?
  • In what ways can you extend sanctuary and refuge to those around you?

Section 2: Appointment of Boundaries (Numbers 35:7-8)

Devotional Thought: The cities' boundaries shall not trespass against the surrounding territories. Instead, they are homes of asylum for those in need of protection. Reflect on the importance of boundaries and protection in your community. By establishing clear boundaries and offering protection and asylum, you create community.

Reflection Questions:

  • How do you strive to establish clear boundaries in your community while providing protection and asylum?
  • What steps can you take to deepen the sense of community in your circle of influence?

Section 3: Set Apartness for Cities (Numbers 35:9-12)

Devotional Thought: The six cities that Moses assigned to the Levites were set apart for the purpose of sanctuary. Priority lies with providing refuge and compassion for those in need. When we prioritize this principle in our daily lives, our community thrives. Let's prioritize kindness, compassion, and love for others, reflecting on the deeper symbolism of the set-apart status of these cities.

Reflection Questions:

  • How do you aim to prioritize the same set-apart status of these cities in your daily life and relationships?
  • What opportunities to provide kindness and compassion to others present themselves in your circumstances?

Section 4: Serious Reminder of Purpose (Numbers 35:25-28)

Devotional Thought: As the land is apportioned, the six cities were "for the Levites ... to possess them." They held a distinct and specific purpose. In our lives today, it is easy to forget the purpose of different aspects of our lives. Let's be reminded of the distinct purposes for which we have been entrusted. Consider how you can continue to honor the specific purposes of various aspects of your life.

Reflection Questions:

  • How can you honor the distinct purposes for different aspects of your life, consistently prioritizing the principles of compassion, kindness, and asylum for others?
  • In what ways can you ensure you are consistently living with a sense of purpose?

Conclusion:

As we conclude our devotional journey through Numbers 35, let's stand in reverence for these six cities of refuge. By recognizing their deeper symbolic meaning, we are challenged to uphold the principles of kindness, compassion, forgiveness, and community. May we strive to extend these virtues to those around us, offering refuge and asylum, and living with a sense of purpose.
